What is a portrait?

The true definition of a portrait photograph is painting the subject either a person or a pet with light. By painting with light  the best features shine while subduing lessor features. A portrait needs to show the subjects personality or mood at the time or convey a mood or personality that represents the message that is being conveyed. Sometimes it needs to be subtle others over the top. Many people say that they don't want a posed portrait, usually what they are saying is that they don't want to look posed. Without the posing the shaping cannot be accomplished properly. A persons build, height, complexion and color all play into the lighting and the posing of the individual and in the end should not look posed. Many of the clients in the testimonial section dreaded having their images captured but required for press releases or magazine articles being written about them.

We all have had portraits done in our lives and there are major differences in the methods used for each time. Times where you may have had a portrait done is in school or as a baby.  Photographs taken at an event are not portraits. The approach by the photographer is different as well. In these lines I will try to convey a little about how I accomplished what you see at this website but I would STRONGLY recommend calling me to discuss your needs and commitment I require to help you achieve the end result.

Babies – Ed Bullinger Photography performs this type of session with a main goal of capturing the peace, innocence and beauty of the young age. Many of the images captured will include family members holding the baby or entertaining them. Usually there will be several group photos where the family positioning becomes more critical than the baby’s so that the family unit will look good.  Click on the image to the left to see a gallery.

Kids capture the energy is key.  Some are low energy and some out of control. The parents should consult with Ed Bullinger Photography to discuss how to best capture the child’s personality during the session. I strongly recommend props/toys that are the child's favorite. Teens – getting the spark of independence which will develop into a raging fire in the years to come but for the parent is one last hold of innocents captured for memories of a long time. For the teen it is a time to start expressing their masculinity or femininity.  Several changes of cloths should be planned and discussed with Ed Bullinger Photography. The goal of the session is to get an image of the teen that the mom and dad wish to cherish for a lifetime (even if it embarasses the teen, but also get a image of the teen that defines this teen at this point of  the pendulum shift that reflects the teens independent or wild side that the parent may be a little embarrassed about. Fun for all is key! Click on the image to the left to see a gallery

Pet portraiture lies very close to the baby session in what you are capturing but could be capturing everything because a pet can be innocent, wild and cute all of the time. My goal in such a session is to capture a look or move that the owner is all too familiar with and wants to remember years after the pet is no longer part of their lives. Click on the Pet Portrait Testimonials, I have separated them for your convenience. Many of us have lost pets over our lives and to have these images give us pleasure when there is a day lacking joy for us. Family Portraits – Ed Bullinger Photography captures the cohesiveness of the family if for only a moment when they are all one. This time is fleeting and most parents wish it does not end but know full well the world is too small and has to much pull to keep the family unit tight for each member’s life. Times to do this type of portrait session is when there is a milestone or one member may be leaving the roos. A family reunion anytime there is a get together. This session takes a considerable amount of planning and coordination and I would advice contacting me as soon as you think this is something that you might be doing in the near future. To fully capture the family dynamics properly I need to see if the family is more stoic or wild and adventurous. Either type yield a great session but very different to say the least.  Click on the image to the left to see a gallery

Corporate /Model/ Business Portrait/Headshot – Ed Bullinger takes all aspects of the client into consideration for this type of session. Hairstyle, clothing taste, facial features build, and where the image ultimately will be used. All of these factor into the structure of the session. Ed may use up to six lights to perform the shaping of the subject. Positioning is key to convey the proper tone for the image. While viewing the sample images note how well these individuals are represented and how powerful a great portrait is for your presence in this media driven age.
